All the way up to the modern day from even before the Viking Age people in Norway have used coloured yarn to weave decorative bands and belts for all sorts of uses in clothing and for special occasions. Weaving techniques have changed over time, but the basic principles have not.
Weaving with a small rigid heddle loom (Grindvev) has a very long history in Norway and was the principal way of making decorative bands – and it is a tradition still alive today. In this session, as well as having the chance to try this technique for yourself, you will learn about these traditions, why people wove and continue to weave bands like this, and the symbolism and meaning of the woven patterns.
- What is a rigid heddle loom – Grindvev?
- Learn about local weaving traditions – why did people need woven bands?
- Materials and techniques used
- The meaning of the patterns and symbols in the bands
- Try for yourself – make your own band on a traditional loom
