Today we all have a concern about the environment around us and making what we do in life as sustainable as possible – but how were things in the Viking Age? This session looks at what can we learn from the past that can be useful in the present.
People in the Viking Age only had natural resources for food, clothing, medicine and other things in daily life. Find out about what they ate, and when, and how nutritious their diet was. Discover the secrets of preservation techniques to store food for longer and in winter.
Learn how they made clothes and from which materials. See what handcrafts were common and how this created value in trade and commerce. Was it ‘sustainable’ in the modern use of the word? Find out and understand what can we learn from older knowledge and skills to become more environmentally responsible today. See and try for yourself.
