Tours in the Bergen area

Looking to explore for a day outside of Bergen? There are many possibilities just on Bergen’s doorstep, many very much off the beaten track, full of history, beautiful nature and a great way to explore Norway’s cultural heritage. Bergen’s hinterland is the gateway to the fjords and its full of places that any just ‘pass through’. And that’s not to mention the coasts and islands around this part of west Norway which are very much an different side of Norway and a wonderful experience in their own right.

Here is a small flavour of what a tour in the Bergen area might offer:

Hidden valleys and Norway’s earliest history

As the glaciers retreated people settled around the coast and fjords around 7000-9000 years ago. There are signs of this settlement around Bergen – hidden, but they can be found all around. Inland from the city is a wild and remote land of hidden valleys, narrow roads and paths, and a way of life that has changed little in centuries, in some important respects. Also hidden here are the changes in more modern times from crazy tunnels to hydro electric power stations hidden in mountains. If you want off the beaten track, then this one of the best places – you’ll see no other tourists. You’ll even be lucky to see any locals!

The glory of fjord Norway – Hardanger

The Hardanger region is easily reachable in a day tour from Bergen. Hardangerfjord has a long history and the signs are there if you where to look. It’s also one of Norway’s most important areas for cultural heritage from its role in the National Romantic image of Norway, to its central role in the revival of Norway’s national costume – or Bunad. Hardanger also has a rich history of boat building, fruit growing and cider making. Oh, and there is a beautiful waterfall or two around, and the Folgefonna glacier.

Islands and coast

Bergen’s history is bound to the water and sea. Trade and shipping are the foundation of the modern city. One way of exploring this further is by taking a trip to explore the coast and islands of this part of west Norway. Here, islands can even be found inland, completely surrounded by fjords – where hidden gems can be found everywhere. It’s even possible to take a tour out to some of nearest islands and get a real taste of the fishing community life and how it has driven life here at the coast since the earliest human settlement here after the end of the last Ice Age.
