Tours in the Voss area

Voss is a beautiful town and has always been an important stopping off point between east and west – the Oslo to Bergen railway and the main roads from the east all converge here. Voss is known for its outdoor life – skiing in winter and extreme sports in summer. But even if all that is not for you, there is so much in the area that you can happily make it a base for exploring some of west Norway’s most beautiful fjords and its most important cultural heritage.

Here’s a flavour of what tours in the Voss area can look like:

Mountains and the King of the Fjords

Voss is surrounded by mountains and it’s not surprising to find that getting anywhere involves passing over them. One such route is across Vikafjellet – one of west Norway’s most beautiful roads, but one which is travelled less often. Once over the mountain you descend to the King of Fjords, Sognefjord at Vik i Sogn. It’s a beautiful and historic enough place without the fact that it has not one, but two 12th century churches – one in stone, Hove, and one in wood, Hopperstad stave church. Vik is full of history as are its surrounds and from here you can quickly find yourself steeped in stories from the Sagas and wandering around villages where there’s a high chance that you’ll be the only visitor. Ever thought of having a whole fjord to yourself? There’s a good chance to make that happen too.

World Heritage Norway

On the doorstep at Voss is some of west Norway’s most beautiful and precious landscapes in the form of the UNESCO World Heritage fjord Nærøyfjord. That in itself alone makes the area worth a visit, but throw in Vikings and wild uninhabited valleys, then the experience becomes altogether next level. Every thought of having your own private Viking to show you round Gudvangen’s Njardarheimr viking village? Then a tour to this area could be for you! There’s a chance to experience the other side of the World Heritage area away from the fjord too – wild beauty almost untouched by human hands.

Glaciers, waterfalls and fjords

South from Voss is a short trip down to the edge of two very contrasting landscape areas – Hardangerfjord and Hardangervidda, or mountain plateau. It’s possible to get a flavour of both from Voss in a day trip. Highlights could include Vøringsfossen waterfall, a view to Hardangerjøkulen glacier. Perhaps the incredible mountain farm at Kjæsen may tempt you, or the beauty of Ulvik and its cider making traditions. And here too, hidden valleys that are rarely visited, such as Espelandsdalen.
